Gelcoat Wax Additive (Tack-Free Additive)

Our Gelcoat Wax Additive, also known as Tack-Free Additive, is designed for use with polyester resins and unwaxed (laminating) gelcoats to produce a hard, fully cured, tack-free surface. During the curing process, the wax migrates to the surface of the resin or gelcoat, forming a thin barrier that blocks oxygen from inhibiting the cure. This allows the final coat to fully harden with a smooth, non-tacky finish.

Wax additive is intended only for the final coat of resin or gelcoat. When building multiple layers, unwaxed gelcoat or laminating resin should be used so each layer can chemically bond to the next. Adding wax to earlier coats will prevent proper bonding unless the surface is sanded before applying additional material.

This additive is commonly used in fiberglass boat repairs, marine construction, automotive composites, mold repairs, and general fiberglass fabrication where a fully cured surface is required for sanding, polishing, or finishing.

Recommended Mixing Ratio

• 1 oz per quart of resin or gelcoat
• 4 oz per gallon of resin or gelcoat

Mix the wax additive thoroughly into the resin or gelcoat before adding MEKP catalyst. Once mixed, catalyze as normal and apply. As the material cures, the wax will naturally rise to the surface, sealing out oxygen and allowing the resin or gelcoat to fully cure.

Important: Wax additive should only be used in the final finishing coat. If additional layers will be applied, use unwaxed gelcoat or laminating resin until the final application.
