        Silmar 249A Surfboard Laminating Resin

Silmar 249A is one of the most widely used polyester laminating resins in the surfboard industry. Engineered specifically for surfboard construction, this premium low-viscosity resin provides exceptional fiberglass wet-out, excellent clarity, and a strong, lightweight laminate.

Its thin consistency allows fiberglass cloth to saturate quickly and thoroughly, helping eliminate dry spots while creating a smooth, professional-quality finish. Silmar 249A contains no wax, making it ideal for laminating applications where additional fiberglass layers or hot coats will be applied.

The resin features a slight blue tint in liquid form but cures to a clear, hard, durable finish. After laminating, a waxed hot coat resin or wax additive can be applied to create a fully cured, sandable, and polishable surface.

        Catalyst Information

Silmar 249A requires MEKP catalyst for proper curing.

        Typical Recommendation:

        • 1% catalyst (approximately 10cc per quart)
        • Approximately 20 minutes of working time at 77°F

Working times will vary based on temperature, humidity, catalyst percentage, and material mass.

        Hardener Options

We offer several MEKP catalyst sizes to accommodate different project requirements:

        • 15cc – Suitable for approximately one quart at 2%
        • 30cc – Suitable for approximately one gallon at 3/4%
        • 60cc – Suitable for approximately one gallon at 2%

For temperatures below 75°F, we recommend selecting the 60cc catalyst option to ensure adequate catalyst is available.

        Important Note

Silmar 249A is a laminating resin and does not contain wax. For final coats that require sanding and polishing, a wax additive or hot coat resin must be used to achieve a fully cured, tack-free surface.
